with some open terrain between you and the enemy.Ģ. Deploy your army in woods just out of range of enemy army. Good luck because this is the worst kind of open-field battle.Īn effective way to deal with this is as follows (patience required):ġ. Have your bows run up and target the enemy general to finish him off, and have any samurai rush up to support your yari ashigaru. Have your yari ashigaru march up in loose formation to avoid arrows, then when they are right in front of the enemy bows turn on spear wall and have your yari ashigaru walk over the enemy's front line, hopefully killing off all their bows and making the enemy melee units charge into the spear wall. If you have high-armor, high stat yari ashigaru and a high-level general, then you might be ok. If you have a weak army and a low-level general your units might rout when you attack. The trees protect from arrows and the AI army gets big attack and morale bonuses from being higher up than your units. The worst is when the AI army is camping on top of a forested hill. Turn on yari ashigaru spear wall, pull your other units behind it, and wait for the carnage to develop. If you do this, then the AI army's melee units will charge at you. If they are standing still and waiting for you to come, here is a mega-tip: kill off all or most of the enemy bows. An exception is when the AI thinks that its army is a lot stronger than yours, then the AI army may come to attack you even though they are the defending army. When you are the attacker, usually the AI army will either stand still on the map waiting for you to approach, or will go to the top of a hill and wait. However sometimes the AI will bug out and the army will just stand there. When the AI army is attacking you, most of the time their army will come to you and attack. They are completely ignorant of burning down your walls and gates.Īre you asking why sometimes the AI army will stand still on the battle map, and other times will come to you and attack? In a siege the AI will always charge your walls and attempt to climb them, taking excessive amounts of casualties just getting to the top. If you have any yari units, set them up on the flank and the cavalry will charge into the spears without thinking twice. When they have cavalry, they will attempt to flank them around occasionally. If you're defensive then this will be good as they will likely run all the way across the map to get you. Shattered AI Yari Ashigaru will bug-out and stand there for the remainder of the battle, essentially becoming a field mine so be careful with that.ĪI tend to run their units everywhere. The only ones they seem to use are the ones that you can set to automatically activate, like Banzai. If the AI believes their ranged unit will outperform your unit in a melee, they'll charge them in.ĪI rarely use any special formations or unit abilities. Use that to your advantage in skirmish phase. Another note on their archers, they never use loose formation. Siege equipment will eliminate this behavior and makes them play like they were the attacking force.ĪI-controlled archers will always target melee-type units over other archers. If they're defending then they'll attempt to take the highground.
